LAST OF AN ANCIENT INN
The old Whito Swan Inn, Epping, one of the most ancient of the historic hotels on the borders of the Forest, is being demolished. Over 800 years old, it was originally called the Swan. The Manor Roll of 1656 describes it as being “s'ltuato in the open street of loping.” In 1740, James King was before the Manor Court “for erecting a signpost on tho waste of the Manor with a sign thereon called the White Swan,” and fined ss. The massive chimney stack of the house Jins always been an object of interest, and it is said that a small house could bo built out of the bricks.
