TARANAKI STREET FIRE
BRIGADE’S SPLENDID WORK A fire which, but for the good work of the Fire Brigade, would have assumed formidable proportions, broke out at 12.45 yesterday morning in 88, Taranaki street, a wood and iron twostory building used as a workshop by Reynard and Turner, cabinetmakers, and owned by Dr. J. S. Elliott. The oontents on the first floor were severely damaged by fire and water, and damage was also done to tlie contents on the ground floor by water. Reynard and Turner’s contents and machinery are insured for £635 in the Northern Union Oflioe, and the building in the same office for £3OO. The oontents of a room on the first floor, occupied by F. Cooper, plumber, were slightly damaged by water, and are uninsured. The flames also spread to 86, Taranaki street, a wood and iron two-story- building, occupied by Aldwin Turtell Beck, carpenter, and owned by Mrs James, 10, Levy street. Beck’s stock, which is covered by a policy in the Sun Office for £IOO, was slightly damaged by water. Another tenant, William George Clark, confectioner, on the ground floor, had his stock, insured in the Sun Office for £l5O, damaged by smoke and water. A boot factory adjoining, 16, Ghuznee street, a \vood and iron two-storv building, owned and occupied by \V. J. Staples and Co., was also concerned in the outbreak, a room at the rear on the first floor, with its contents, being slightly damaged by fire and water. The building is insured in the Standard Office for £llOO, and the contents and machinery in the Queensland, South British, and Sun Offices for £5130. An excellent save of tho three buildings was made by the brigade.
