WOMAN AS MAYOR
POSSIBLE IN MELBOURNE. Under the Sex Equality Bill, passed by the Legislative Assembly to-day (says a Melbourne paper), a woman can hold office as “Lord Mayor” of Melbourne. The Bill, which was introduced by Mr Blackburn, Labour member for Fitzroy, aims at a general removal of the disqualifications of women from public offices and professions. The Bill was passed with few amendments. One clause of the Bill provides that a person should not be disqualified by sex or marriage from the exercise of any public function, or from being appointed to or holding any civil or judicial office. Another clause provides that nothing in the Act should impose upon women any liability to serve as jurors.
