DRIVERS’ LICENSES

ISSUED TO FOOLS DISCUSSION AT NAPIER. Per Press Association. NAPIER, November 16. Several somewhat scathing remarks about the issuing of motor-drivers’ licenses were passed at yesterday’s meeting of the Hawke’s Bay County Council. “Is it a fact,” asked Councillor J. S. Orr, ‘ ‘that we give a license to drive a car to any fool that comes along?” The chairman (Mr H. M. Campbelll : That is so. But others get one as well. Councillor Orr: What on» earth is the good of giving a lioense at all at that rate? Mr Campbell: _ It 'is no good unless the driver gets into some trouble. Except for some special reason there is no power to refuse a license. Councillor T. M. Chambers: 1 was under tjie Impression that applicants were supposed to pass an examination. The chairman: The practice was started in one place, then stopped. It is quite hopeless unless the examination applies to all. Councillor Orr: As tilings are now, then anyone can get a license? The chairman : That is so. The bigger the fool, the bigger the license.
