AFTER A RECORD
BIG GAME FISHERMAN COMES SOME FINE SPORT. Still another seeker of big game fish arrived by the Tainui yesterday. His name is Mr H. White-Wickham, and lie comes to the country in an attempt to recapture a world’s record, which he has held before. It was in 1921-22 that Mr White-Wickham was last here, and he caught two mako sharks which were among the world’s best. The first was 3501 b, the second 4421 b, and these, with a swordfish of 3271 b were world’s records at the time. Last year, however, Mr E. P. Andreas, an Australian, bettered the mako shark catch by one about 1001 b heavier, while Captain Mitchell also lias landed a big fellow, though Mr White-Wickham says that he has heard a report that the Bay of Islands Mako Shark Fishing Club will not recognise this big bag because of the tackle used. Oil his previous visit Mr WhiteWickham landed seven kingfisli. seven mako sharks, and three swordfish in 11 days, most of +,bem off Cape Brett, and he went away describing New Zealand deep-sea fishing as the most wonderful in the world. He uses the regulation tackle, a 16oz tarpon rod with a 36 thread line. “Last time I was here I did not have enough time in the country,” he said yesterday. “This time I intend to fish at Taupo and Rotorua, and to visit the Wnitomo Caves and generally see the sights.” He will go north in a day or two.
