RICCARTON CARNIVAL ENDS
RAPINE BEATS FINE FIELD IN STEAD GOLD CUP CLARINDA AND CENTREPIECE WIN MASTER DOON WINS WAIKATO CUP IN GREAT FINISH The carnival of racing and trotting in Christchurch ended on Saturday with the racing at Ric carton, where the Stead Gold Cup was won by Rapine, with Comm'endation second. The chief handicap evens were won by Clarinda and Centrepiece. The Waikato Cup produced a close finish, in which Master Doon won narrowly from Eden Hall and Tresham, who dead-heated. Chairman won the open sprint.
THE RACING AT RICCARTON RAPINE STILL GREAT. (By Telegraph.—Special to “Times.”) CHRISTCHURCH, November 13. The weather was pleasant for the concluding day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting. Owing to the rain that fell on the previous day the track was in a heavy state. There was a good attendance. Though sore The Harp won the Suburban Handicap easily in the heavy going. Towards the end of the contest the majority of the competitors seemed to be anchored. Goosestep was sent out favourite, and after being ridden a patient race, he made an effort in the straight, but was unable to reach the money. Monoxide carried the field along for seven furlongs, but then faded out. Santiago and Sunny Loch came on the scene at the distance to decide the minor places, Sunny Loch being too good for his northern rival. Clare Crag was in third place all through the middle
iiiimiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiimiiiiiiiii stages, but failed to come on in the straight. FAVOURITES FAIL Booster made a brave effort to win the Cressy Handicap, for which he was made favourite. He began smartly and was still prominent when the straight was reached, but he failed to stick to his opponents, finishing fourth. Lady Desmond began well, but with two furlongs disposed of she was accounted for. At the head of the straight Mireusonta, Set Sail, Economist, Rapier, Booster, High Pitch and Paperchase were all handily placed, but when the last furlong was entered upon there were only two in it—Rapier and Paperchase. In the battle for first money they left their opponents, Rapier beating Paperchase by a head. High Pitch finished best of the others, and secured third money. Economist ran a good race to finish fifth. Rapier is a particularly useful horse in heavy going. In a field of nineteen, David Garrick was better backed than Vesperus and Taboo for the Seymour Handicap. In the first five furlongs Gold Town, Prophet’s Mark, Precious, Celerity H., Solrose and Thorndale were at the head of the field. Leaving the home turn Celerity 11. and Gold Town were in the lead, but when asked a question they failed to respond. Solrose and Precious gave in after covering six furlongs. At this stage Taboo and David Garrick left the field. Vesperus was doing best of the others. Though David Garrick finished well, he could not catch Taboo, who went away to register his second win at the meeting rather easily. David Garrick experienced little difficulty in beating Vesperus for second place. Among the beaten division that appealed was Dark Spot, who might not be long in picking up a stake. CENTREPIECE AGAIN Haze was the only absentee when the roll was called for the Members’ Handicap, leaving ten candidates to contest the event. It was a good betting race. Nadarino was the popular selection. He began quickly, but with a furlong covered S. Wilson steadied him and allowed Arpent, Fool’s Paradise and Licinius to make the pace. When the distance post was reached Nadarino put in his claim, but meanwhile Centrepiece came from the second division, with Rouex also inquiring for first honours. The issue* resolved itself into a fight between Centrepiece, Nadarino and Rouex. Rouex was noticed to hesitate, and .Ocntrepiece dashed into the lead with Nadarino after him. but Centrepiece had the race won. Circulation was well up when two furlongs were negotiated, but a few yards further on she was knocked back nearly to Inst. She came again in tho straight to fill fourth place. The Pioneer Handicap produced a screaming hot favourite in Roval Cores, who despite his impost beat bis six opponents in convincing style. Starflight did net appreciate the going. but Money Peer and Jericho handled the trnek well. A CLASSIC CONTEST The G. G. Stead Gold Cup provided a splendid finish between Rapine and Commend.ation. From the moment the harrier was released Reremoana took charge, and led along the hank and round tho bend from Grand Knight. Commendation, Star Stranger, and Rapine. Nearing the home bend Rapine closed on bis opponents, and when the field straightened up for home 'Grand Knight beaded Reremoana. At this stage it appeared as if Cnmniendation had got into a had position, and Rapine had to draw nost before be could get a clear run. A hundred yards from _ the iudge Rapine headed Grand Knight, hut Commendation then put ; n a strong run. and F. E. Jones had to get tq work an RauiuCv thq tog
weight being all out to finish half a length in front of Commendation. Of the eleven carded Seatown was favourite for the Stonyliurst Handicap, and out smartly he led all the way to win easily by a good length from Front Rank, who drew
away from the rest of the field at the distance and obtained an. easy second. Pink Terrace was third. Both Rascal and Countersign lost ground in the middle stages, and were well beaten a furlong from home. Hynanna made an effort at the top of the straight, but he was soon in trouble, finishing well down the course. A stirring contest for the Fendalton Handicap a fitting Conclusion to the fixture. Of the seven competitors Clarinda was entrusted with most money, and it was only after a real set-to in the straight with Footfall that she prevailed by a'neck. Ravenna was responsible for the pace, and was still in charge at the turn for home, but when tackled by Clarinda, Footfall, Fresco, Full Swing, and Vaward she was soon in trouble. Full Swing had every opportunity, but could not reach the money. Prior to the race Vaward was purchased by Mr J. M. Sanson in whose interests he ran. He was coupled on the totalisator with Mountain Lion. The totalisator turnover for the day was £55,029 10s, as against £58,72910s for the fourth day last year; DETAILSUf RACING TOTALISATOR STILL FALLING Per Press Association 1 CHRISTCHURCH. November 14.
