BOWLING

WELLINGTON CLUB. ANNUAL MEETING HELD. The annual meeting of the Wellington Bowling Club was held last night, Mr T. Ballinger (president) presiding over a large attendance of members. , , The president moved the adoption of the annual repent and balance-sheet, already summarised in our columns: and in speaking to the motion Mr I. Salek (lioiv (treasurer) stressed the necessity for adopting club by-laws so that new members could clearly see what privileges membership of -tho duo entitled them to. Referring to the Peace gates, Mr Salek said that it was. estimated ■ that they would cost .£3OO, but the lowest tender they got was 4’or £Bsf>. Mr Field® was the architect * who designed the gates, and he thought that the design when” carried- out would be found to be very suitable and satisfactory. Mr Wilson had commenced the erection of the gates on tho day labour basis; but iho work hhd been hung up for want of cement, and it was now being completed by Mr Glendining. The billiard-room had realised the very satisfactory sum of £l2O, and he was sure 'that tho club thoroughly appreciated the good work that Mr Tasker (hen. secretary) had put in in that connection. (Applause.) The revenue for the past year had been .£1203, an increase of £350 on tho previous year, while the expenditure had been .£74], as against £853 the year before; and that, he held, was a veny satisfactory state of affairs. The property was increasing in age, and the expenditure for upkeep and repairs was therefore grow, ing. and he thought that, over ail, their expenditure next year could not be less than .£BSO. During yie year he had paid oil £SOO that was on deposit, leaving on deposit now only £4OO. A member had, offered him some £2OO or £3OO on deposit, but he had had to refuse it. as he could find no use for the money, biit he thought that the incident showed what great confidence the members had in the club. At the end of the year they were £3OO better off tjyan at the end of the previous year. The president thanked tho directors nnd the members for their kind support during the rear; and, referring to tho condition of the club property, said that tho club would have .to face the necessity for. painting the pavilion inside and' out during the coming year, more especially as the Dominion tournament . will be held hero this year.' After a desultory discussion the report and balance-sheet were adopted. ELECTION OF OFFICERS.

The following Officers were elected for tho ensuing year President, Mr M. A. Carr; vice-president, Mr G. Magnus: bon. secretary, Mr F. J. Tasker; hon. treasurer,’Mr I. Salek; auditor, Mr FI. Liddlo; directors, Messrs W. Glendining. L. Ledger, H. G.' Smith, W. J. Thompson, A. A. Wylie; match committee, Messrs H. Jackman and It. C. Kiuvig.

In thanking the club for electing him president, Mr Carr said that ho had •now achieved his great ambition as a ■bowler. (Applause.) The coming season was .a. very important one, as they were to hold in Wellington the largest Dominion tournament that New Zealand had vet seen, and ho asked the officers and members of the club to do all that they could to make the tournament a great success. (Applause.) Tho retiring president presented tho prizes to the various winners, and in doing so congratulated tho post president, Mr A. Wylie, upon having the honour of being the first winner of the Peace Cup. SKIPS IN PENNANT MATCHES.

Mr J. D. Siovwright moved that for pennant matches it be an instruction to the match, committee that the commitleo select the skips, who will then confer with tho committee as to . the selection of tho remainder of the teams. For years past, he said, the club had been attempting to win the pennant, but without success; and, as the premier club in Wellington, he believed that with more effective selection of (he teams, they oouid win it. (Applause.) The president ruled out of order further notices of motion—by Mr Hill, "That 40 members (selected by members at annual meeting) be pennant match players; the 40 selected to , elect the skips, and the skills select tho teams for approval of tho match committee’’; by Mr Innes, "That for pennant matches a eole selector' bo appointed.’’, These motions, ho said, involved an amendment of (ho rules, and duo notice of such amendment had not been given. CLUB AND CENTRE. Mr Sievwright’s motion, was lost bv 28 votes to 24. \ Mr Siovwright also inoved that the club should accede from tho Centre, for the reasons \ (1) That the Centre did nothing that’tfhc clubs, could not do as well; (2) that the Centre was extravagant and a tax upon bowlers without adequate representation; and (3) that tho money would be 'better' spent on the improvement of the greens. The motion was strongly opposed and thy reasons given strongly criticised by Mr Roberts and Mr Barker. Tho motion was lost bv an overwhelming majority.
