FIXTURES. June 18 and 19—Napier Park E.C. WinJuno 23, 24, and 26—Hawks’s Bay J.C. and Hawke’s Bar Hunt Winter. July 17 —Wellington K.C. Winter. July'22—South Canterbury Hunt Steeplechase. NOTES AND COMMENTS (By "Carbine.”) After the failure of Lochella to got away to Sydney, the chances of Gloaming being taken do not lock too rosy. If the brilliant son' of Tho. Welkin K fi te away, there seems to bo just a chance that ho will not return. He won almost £17,0C0, and is among Australasia 3 principal stake winners. It, would bo good to see him get opportunities to increase his total.
It is a curious thing that when the now promising steeplechaser Slowcoach, was first tried as a jumper, ho could scarcely be induced to look at a fence of any kind, and his trainer could see very little use in going on with him. However, perseverance has been rewarded, and. the. son of' Waukenpbast will be in the boom before long. The es-Now Zealander Beltane, who won the Windarra Hurdles in Victoria on Saturday, is likely to bo one of the fancied candidates for big jumping events across the water this season.
Another in whom New Zealanders take an interest. British Arch, has been sold by Hr Carter to Mr Leslie btuant, and will in future bo trained by P. K. Hadfield at Caulfield.
Remarking on the.earnings of.jockeys, an English writer tells of the case of a rider of 23 whoso savings included £cb.000 deposited in a joint stock bank Ho adds that there cl re at least a dozen jookeyS in England "ho earn between .£2OOO and .£SOOO a year, and. that lor many years Maher must have averaged .£SOOO.

For the month of May the totalisatoi turnover in Sydney was £194,000. In America an offer of -£4OOO was refused for the Kentucky Derby candidate, The Swimmer, by Ivan the lor. rible.
Recently the Jockeys' Association Interested itself in the matter of the fining of the Auckland horseman, S. Henderson, by starter O'Connor at _ the Ohinemnri meeting. Mr O’Connor a version of the affair is given m the following letter by him to the secretary of the Ohinemnri Club .—‘‘Henderson, as stated, rode Hineamarn in two paces at your recent meeting. In the first of the two £aces I fined Henderson £1 for deliberately breaking through the staring barrier in an attempt to gain tho advantage of a flying start. In the second race in which Henderson rode Hineamaru I instructed him to keep his mount behind the other competitors at tho start, ing post. He (Henderson) commenced to argue, and took Hineamarn amongst the field. For this disobedience I fined Henderson £2. and perhaps was far too lenient. Robinson rede Hineamarn -on the first day of the meeting, and m accordance with mv instructions allowed her to stand behind tho field until led into her position by Patterson, my assistant. As Robinson to not in any wav to blame, because several horses would not lino up properly and one broke the arm of the barrier he (Eobmson) was not fined. I think, sir, when tho members of your club are acquainted with these facts they are scarcely likely to remit the fines." The stewards of the club considered Mr 0 Connor- s state, ment satisfactory.
