MEETING OF BOROUGH COUNCIL.
A meeting of the Petone Borough Council was held last evening. Tin* Mayor (Mr J. VV. Alcßwaa) presided, and there were, present: Councillors C. P. Brocklebank, J. Churchouse, J. Kyle, .VV. Hay, A. Anderson, D. Bedingheid, G. Coot, and J2. Tovey. Tho Prime Minister advised that the proposal to make Saturday afternoon a universal hali'-holidaw throughout the Dominion would he considered when the legislative jprogroinine | was ibeing reviewed.
"Tho question of removing the duty on footwear as advocated by bne liuwcua Council and supported hy the. t'oLono Council is 'to receive due consideration by the Government," stated tho i'iuino .Minister in reply to a communication from the .council.

A conimunica,tion was received from the l J riino Minister to the effect that the Board, of Trade was investigating . the suggestion of the council relativo to Household coal being distributed by dealers an one ewt lotß.
Advioe -was received from the eecretarj of the Wellington Coal Trade Committoe stating that 50 tons of coal had been allocated to the council. 'i'ho coal is to Too stored and only drawn upon in approved cases of sickness, and when otiu-.r supplies are not available.
The borough engineer (Mir A. CowieJ reported that a considerable amount ol routine work had been accomplished duriiwr the past, month. Until a sufficient supply of metal was available the streets were boing patohed. Owing to building operations tho water main to the Gear Company's works had to bo altoMxl and a considerable amount of work was necessary in . order to do so. It waa proposed to charge tho company «ith tho cost. * * The borough inspector (Jlt W. B. Grough) reported that there were a num. bor of buildings in the borough which required repairing- and that 66 notices had 'been sent to various owners dn this regard. Two houses and a. portion of a third, which were oondomnod, had boen demolished.
It was decided to defer granting permission to the Patone Labour party to hold a gathering in a theatre on a Sunday till the programme was submitted for approval. An application made by a landowner to cut up sections with 25 feet frontago to a. main road, was refused.
