SUCCESSFUL 'CARNIVAL. The Methodists of Wellington- and sur« rounding districts have for some timf past recognised that an important aspect in their Christian work, the establish, ingof a home for those little ones bereft of their parents, needed prosecuting. Aci cordingly the authorities of the church decided to erect an up-to-date orphanage to moat such requirenints, and the building is now in course of ereition at Masterton, and, when completed, will, it is. stated, bo one of the best equipped establishments in the Dominion. "Iha building and land will coat approximately jCGOOO, and to provide funds for furnishing it, the Young Womens' Bible Class Union in connection with tho church held a carnival in the Taranaki street schoolroom on Saturday night, the large' ball bein? turned into a veritable fairyland, with decorations of lycopodeum wisteria, and cherry blossoms, and scores of Chinese lanterns. Some 40 young vomen gave selctions from "The Geisha." while a musical and elocutionary programme was contributed to by the following :—Songs, Misses Elsie Boxall, B. Chapman, J. Sutherland, Mr Strong,.Mr Hiridle: recitations. Misses Gwen Burley and V6v; violin solo. Mr Wooloock; dialogue. Misses N. Sutch, T. .T. Dormer. Gittings, and Wishart. Miss E. Bell and Me&dames Strong and Hindle played tb« accompaniments. At the conclusion of the programme « "mysterious" supper was provided by the young ladies. As a result of <he evening's efforts a substantial sum was raised. Spscial praise is due to tha two organisers (Missfs Ward and JE3. Boxall) for .the greaf success of thp gathering, the former lady intimating that this was the girls' effort towards tho orphanage.
