EDUCATION BOARD
FILLING THE VACANCIES COMMITTEES' NOMINATIONS AND WOMEN'S REPRESENTATION. The Wellington School Association last evening spent some time in discussing the matter of the nomination of candidates for election to the Education Board to till vacancies caused by the retirement of Messrs R. A. Wright aiid J. P. Shand.
A communication was read from the Women's National Council asking for support in its campaign for the representation of women on the Education Board. The chairman (Mr A. G. Wallace) remarked that there had btlm lots ox gentlemen on the board before now who had bee.i very ladylike in their action*. Mr O'Neil (Johnsonvillej pointed out that the council's delegation was not. present at the meeting; he thought tha matter should not be di»cu'c-sed in tha absence of the delegation in order to give them satisfaction. The chairman i But radios are never satisfied whichever way you take it. Mr J. O. Shorland thought the matter should be deferred. A lady member of the association explained that the Women's National Council was composed of the affiliated women's .societies. They thought it was time that women's thoughts should bo represented in education matters. The chairman said the association should not encourage the tlcctiort to th» Education Board of persons outride their own body. Women were not always the most suitable representative* ou tho board, for they naturally did not understand committee work. I Another member of the association thought that the most acceptable person* should be elected to the board irresreoi tive of set .
I The meeting proceeded 'fo discuss a series of suggestions put to it by Jlr B. B. Hill in regard to the machinery of the election. The suggestions were puff to the meeting as motions and carried aa follows: —(1) That this association is of opinion that when possible active dole-i gates to the association chooltf reoeiva .nomination for vaoancies arising- on tha Lxiucation Board: that should more than two nominations be received a ballot ba taken, and by such method as will assure a majority rote for the two selected candidates; that it be a recommendation from this association . that all delegates urge their lespoctive- committees to. support the candidates selected by the School Committees" Association. Nominations wore then taken for tha election. The chairman declined to aocept .the . names of persons outside tha association. Tho nominations were aa follow:—Messrs A. J. White, L. Hennessy, G. Startup, J. O. Shorland. A. W. ;Croskery, and Mrs Snow. Messrs Whita and Shorland were the selected nominees. It was decided to inform the Women's I National Council that tho cssociatioa ! was unable to agree to,the nomination of the council's representatives for election to the Education Board, as it affirmed the principle that nominees should b« [ members ot the association.
The meeting proceeded to deal with. olner matters on the order parer. but on account of the lateness of the hour 'fuTbhar business was deferied till a. special meeting to be held on June 23th.
