WERAROA FARM COLLEGE

A HAWK'ES BAY PROTEST MINISTER FOR AGRICULTURE REMAINS FIRM. The Hoh. W. Nosworthy (Minister for Agriculture) has received from Hawke’s Ray numerous protests against the decision to dovota the proceeds of the Josiah Howard bequest to the establishing of an agricultural college at Weraroa. In each case the Minister has replied that the decision was arrived at alter full consideration, and he is not disposed to change it. lb purchase a property in Hawke's Bay, he states, would require not only considerable initial expenditure, but would also necessitate a large sum being made available annually in order to meet the expense of carrying on the institute, which it is proposed shall be absolutely upi to date. By establishing the institute on a farm already in operation by the Government the position from tne point of view of expenditure can bo met in a far hotter way. The Minister added that the whole question of how to use the bequest to the best advantage received very careful consideration, as it was realised that.the college should be well designed, and well equipped in every way, as regards land, buildings, and accessories, and also in the matter of teaching staff. The decision, arrived as was that the best results would be obtained by establishing the college at the Government tarm at Weraroa.

Establishing tho institute elsewhere than in Hawke’s Bay still enables it to be available for training purposes for young men from the Hawke’s Bay district, and the Minister states bo would be quite prepar ed to arrange that' they should have the first claim on the accommodation and instruction provided at the institute. The matter of agricultural education is a very important one in the Dominion, at the present time, and should be dealt with front a broad standpoint.
