Kid Lewie defeated Basham at Olympia in the welter championship of Europe for a puree of -CSOOC. The referee stopped the fight in tho ninth round, owing to Basham's weakness and loss of blood. Many spectators previously clamoured to stop the fight. When the last mail left England snorting writers appeared 'to be doubtful whether or no a meeting between Lewis and Basham would take place. The former, spoken of as a possible opponent to Carpontier, has been recognised as one of the best welters seen in England of recent years, but Basham and his comparatively easy victories over Bombardier Wells had gained many admirers of his chances of success in thi?, hie latest and biggest match.
