STARVING IMPORTER COMMITS THEFT
HOTEL AUSTRALIA TO STREET. At tlio Central Police Court in Syd. ney Samuel Arthur van E-bbanhorste Enghergen aged 40- years, an importer, was charged with theft. A detective stated that accused had admitted having stolen from the bedroom of Mrs Dawson, of the Hotel Australia, an opera cloak and other articles, valued at £6O. He handed the articles over to tho police. In defence accused said that ho had had nothing to eat for three days. He had tried in every way to get something to eat, but no one would give him anything. Ten years ago ho used to stay at the Hotel Australia. At the time he, had about £5-1,1)00, but since then he had lost everything. Portion of his money was invested in Russian shares, and he lost til is during the war. On the day he took the articles he went to the Hotel Australia and asked for something. ‘‘They refused,” he concluded, “and 1 became desperate and took the things.’ 1
