EASTERN SUBURBS

DELEGATES MEET municipal electors* association FORMED. I Delegates from the Lyall Bay, Melrose, Seatoun, Miramar, Kilbirnie, and.Hataitai Municipal Electors' Association met last evening and formed the Eastern Suburbs’ Municipal Electors” Association. ■'The aim of the association,” said tho chairman, Mr A. C. Blake, “is to further tho general welfare of the district to the cast of Mount "Victoria, and ’to assist the City Council in matters pertaining to the district and the city.” It was decided by the meeting that the following matters require . tho immediate attention ,of the' association:— The construction of a- traffic tunnel; a library; the widening of Evans Bay road; the completion of Seatoun road so as to make it possible to drive round tho Peninsula; the formation of sports clubs for tennis, bowls, . cricket, etc.; and the improvement and construction of adequate playing grounds. ■> .The chairman pointed out that there were now some twelve thousand people living to the cast of the ridge, and it was absurd to have but one very small tunnel to carry such a population to the city. . , . . Mr Crawford gave some very interesting information as to plans for the layout of Miramar and wharf and dock accommodation prepared in 1876. He drew attention to the fact that oil tanks will, in the near future, be constructed close to tho Miramar wharf, and the new power station for the electric light department was to be erected convenient to the same wharf, which had water to a depth of II feet. He stressed the necessity for the railway to be extended to Miramar. Mr Leigh Hunt advocated the "zoning” of the district, at once, so that industrial areas would not clash, with shopping and residential, etc. Mr Cairns instanced Potono as an example of the want of town-planning, and trusted that’ the association, would bo strong enough to prevent tho district from becoming another “awful example.” A committee was set up to seek out suitable candidates for the City Council, who should receive tho support of tho association at the next municipal election.'

The association resolved to join the Town-Planning Association, and to hold monthly meetings.

Mr Harold Pilcher was elected 1 secretary..
