CONFERENCE OF PREMIERS
IMMIGRATION PROPOSALS. AUSTRALIAN ACTION. At the Conference of Premiers, held at Melbourne, the following immigration scheme was put forward by Mr Hughes:(l) The Commonwealth to have full control oversea; (2) the Agenta-General of Several States to form a consultative committee in London; (3) Commonwealth to be responsible for and have control of all oversea organisation and transport arrangements for bringing immigrants to Australia; (4) primary object of the schema to be the settlement of immigrants on the lands of Australia; (5) preference to be given to British exservice men, the Commonwealth to seek the co-operation and assistance of the British Government in obtaining the right type'of immigrant and pro. viding passages; (6) the Commonwealth to assume financial, responsibility for organisation for immigrants from oversea, and then transport to Australia; (7) the States to be responsible for immigrants bn arrival in Axistralia and for their settlement on suitable land, and for employment on public works; (8) the States to enter into an agreement with the Commonwealth setting out in definite terms what .they find themselves to do in regard to providing (a) land, (b) other forms of assistance such as depots, sustenance, general care of immigrants, employment on public works, particularly on unification of railways and Murray waters scheme for (1) service men, (2) other classes of immigrants. The proposals were adopted.
