Air W. J. Gow, latterly assistant chief clerk in the Post and Telegraph Department, has been appointed, chief clerk in succession to Mr A. T. Markman, who has been promoted to the position of first assistant secretary.
The death occurred late last week at Dunedin, at the early ago of 34, of Mr David Rutherford, chief occountant in the Imperial Supplies Department. Although he was on sick leave at the time his death was quite;unexpected.
Councillor J.r Barclay, who was eleo« ted unopposed for the Horokiwl riding of the .Hutt County-Council, after the death of the late Councillor J. Galloway, took his seat for the first-time at the monthly meeting yesterday. The chairman (Mr M. W. Welch)- and Councillor W. J. Howell tendered tho new councillor a cordial welcome;
The Hon. C. J. Parr (Minister for Education), has been invited to open the new primary school at Foxton, and also to visit Tokomaru. The Minister proposes to comply with the request, probably within the next fontnight. Next week it is likely that Mr Parr will visit Christchurch at the request of the Education Board, which desires to discuss various local educational matters with him.
Tho chairman of the Hutt County Council, Councillor F. G. Cooper, who, as a result of an accident last week, had hia leg broken, was unable to £steud the monthly. meeting of the council yesterday. Several members of the council expressed sympathy with Councillor Cooper in meeting with the accident, and the clerk was instructed to convey to him the hopes for a speedy recovery.
Air W. J- Beauchamp, Gisborne manager of the New Zealand* Shipping Company, - is to succeed Mr Preston as manager of the Union Steam Ship Company at Gisborne. An amalgamation of the two businesses at‘ Gisborne will be effected, and when arrangements are completed both concerns will be administered from one office, which in fhe case of Gisborne will ■be that at present occupied by the Union Company. Mr Preston will be leaving Gisborne in two, or three weeks' time. ....
The death occurred at an early, hour .yesterday morning of a wellknown resident of Wellington, Mr Peter Still. Sixty-four years of age, the late Mr Still had been ailing for some time. He took part in the Wel-lington-Canterimry chess match on Saturday night last, but took ill during the evening, and had to be removed to his home, where later he passed away-in his sleep.. The late i\tr Still, who ha® left a widow and three d&uglitcrSj was associ&tcd with the local-firm of W. Littlejohn and Son, jewellers. He was also a prominent bowler. :
Mr J. R. Kirk,’ of, Gisborne, is at present on a visit to. Wellington, Air Kirk, who was formerly Mayor of Gisborne, enlisted in' the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, in which he rendered good service. Towards the end of tjio war, Air Kirk, who held the rank of captain, was detailed for special duty in connection with the vocational classes, 1 and his enthusiasm and organising capacity were factors in the progress of that interesting and important work. Captain Kirlc was mentioned in official dispatches, and today will receive the Order of the British Empire at the Investiture at Government House.
Mr A IV. Rodger,, chairman of th« Electric Power Boards, -was waited upon by a representative deputation or commercial men and others and presented with an address and draft for £2OOO in recognition of his services to -tho province as chairman of the Southland League and Electrification Committee, which carried out the preliminary q-ork in connection with the provincial electrical scheme. Tho Mayor, who acted as spokesman, and made the presentation, referred-in high terms to Mr Rodger’s. patriotic and unselfish efforts to advance the interests of the province, which had been crowned with such splendid, success.—Press * As* sociation telegram from Invercargill.
Mr G. B. Dali, .second assistant secretary to the Post and Telegraph Department, has resigned from that position. He has a record of 45 years’ service, as he joined the department as a cadet in Milton on July sth, 1875. In 1880 he was transferred to Dunedin where he became senior clerk in the Money Order and Savings Bank branch in 1892, and chief clerk in 1901. On Jamiarv Ist, 1907, he became _Assist-ant-Inspector of Post Offices in the Central district, and later in the year inspector in the Wellington district. Later ho was appointed Second Assist-ant-Secretary, and has since served in that eapacitv. except for a year 5 a service, in 1918r19 as .Inspector of-Postal Services with the H.Z.E.P. in England. Though retiring from the Head Office, Mr Dali will retain his connection with the service, as he is the Government nominee on tho Post and Telegraph Appeal Board.
