MILK SUPPLY

PROPOSALS AT KOPUTOROA.

Special to the “Time*/'

A meeting of dairy farmers was held at Koputoroa, writes tho “Times” Otaki correspondent, to consider the question of, the establishment of a dairy factory in that district, or any other scheme for tho disposal of the milk produced. Soma discussion ensued concerning a proposal to supply tho Wellington city. A letter was received from Mr Ward, manager of the Municipal Supply Department, asking for particulars as to supply available, etc., and Mr Spencer said ho had had an interview with Hr Ward, who had said tho City Council was prepared to establish a factory at Koputoroa, end take as much milk as could be supplied in summer, but they would require a guarantee of 400 cows for tho winter before they would take this step. Tho chairman and Air Spencer said the Otaki dairymen were evidently satisfied with their arrangement with the City Council, and the matter was worthy of full inquiry. Hr Kilsby said there was talk of big prices for butter-fat next season, and if that turned out to be true, would the Citv Council pay tbo same? Mr Webb said tho city had guaranteed to pay equal to any price paid by any other organisation within 60 miles of Wellington. Hr Spencer said one advantage of ilia city supply was that they would meet a cheese or other kind of factory, which was a big advantage, and no burden on tho supplier. Mr fl ood, a director of the Afnngawhata cheese factory, staled that Mr McDonald, of Palmerston North, who had purchased Mr Bock’s property at Koputaroa, proposed putting up a cheese factory, aid they could not do better than Interview him. The speaker said ho had come from the Managawhata district, and was a cheese factory supplier, and had been quite satisfied with bis returns. His old factory bad paid 2s per lb butter-fat this season, which he contended was better than the city supply. Mr McDonald was prepared to come down and explain tho matter to the farmers if they desired. Mr McDonald had been largely interested in cheese factories in Rangiotu and adjacent districts and his opinion was worth haring. The chairman said that as they had received the offer from the City Council, thev should consider that first, but they should certainly hear Aft* AlcDonaid also. Tt was eventually decided that Mr Ward should be asked to pay a visit and address the famers on the subject.
