ANOTHER BIG DECLINE

The position in regard to the influenza epidemic that has recently passed over the country is rendered much brighter by the figures from tho past week. These show a large decrease upon the report for the previous week. The number of influenza cast* notified in the Wellington Health District during the week was 27il (I severe,, 13 pneumonic), us against 621 (10 severe, ■ 21 pneumonic) the previous week, and UlO 03 severe, 21 pneumonic) in tho week before that. This represents a decrease in the number of casco reported in a week of 34-3. The Influenza eases wero reported from tho various centres as fellows; , Waipawa, It (all mild). Taranaki, 20 (1 pneumonic). Stratford, 26 (1 pneumonic). Hawera, 25 (all mild). Patea, 13 (all mild). Wanganui, 35 (7 pneumonic). Wellington, S 3 (city, 6 pneumonic, 66 mild; Petone, l severe, 10 mild). Palmerston North, 36 (all mild). , Wairarapa, 23 (all mild). Nelson, 7 (all mild). P OSITTON SAT ISFACTO RY. Commenting upon the week’s figures, Dr I. E. Faris, the district health officer, oaid that the position w; 1,, very satisfactory; he thought wo had now reached the end of the wave of influenza- that had apparently passed over the country. Still, there might, of course, be a recurrence of the malady in a mild way. An increase in the number of influenza cases was reported from only one centre—Nelson—where a rise of four was shown. Wanganui.—Diphtheria, 4; tuberculosis, 1; pneumonia, 1; ophthalmia, 1; varicella, 1.
Palmerston North.—Diphtheria, C; pneumonia, 2; measles, 1; ophthalmic neonatorium 1; varicella, 4; hydatids, X.
Wellington.—Diphtheria, 8; enteric fever, 1; tuberculosis, 2; pneumonia, -) ; .erysipelas, 2. Wa-irarapa.-—Scarlet fever, 4; diphtheria, 1 ; tuberculosis, 1.
Wairau. —Pneumonia, 1. Nelson.—Scarlet fever, 2; diphtheria, 2; measles, 1; varicella, 1.
