THE "SOCCER” GOOE

SATURDAY’S MATCHES

A SURPRISE.- MARIST DEFEAT Y.M.C.A. "DIGGER’’ TEAM.

The surprise of Saturday’s Soccer ion tests was the defeat of the Y.M.C.A. B ‘Digger’’ team by Morist., The match was played at Seatoun Park, under ideal conditions and a fast and interesting game resulted. This is the first time the Y.M. "Diggers” have been defeated. As a result Institute is in the lead, with Thistle second, and Y.M.C.A. B third. From the kick-ofl Y.M. invaded Marists goal per medium of Cusack and Phillips. Casey (Marist) clearing at the expense of a corner. Cusack placed the hall nicely in front of"the goal, and a scramble ensued, but the ball was eventually cleared bv McCarthy. McElllgott and <,af ruthers quickly transferred the play to Y.M.’s goal, the shot by the latter going behind. Marist came again, and McBlligott tested Thirkell with' a god shot, which was well oleared. The c-m----fcination of the Marist forwards was excellent, • bpt the finishing passes wera being sent too far ahead. Williamson and Myers, full-backs for T.M., were playing a solid defensive game, stopping many dangerous rushes. Y.M. attacked strongly, Bosher (centre-half) sending the ball repeatedly to tho wing men, Cusack and Morris, who centred well on occasions, but the opportunities were not availed of. From a goal kick, Ryan (Marist) set his forwards going, Lowe receiving and sending on ’to Burke, a fourth-class bov, whose play was well worth seeing. He dribbled past three opponents and sent the ball to his partner, and the shot just missed the goal. For the rest of the spell play was very fast. SECOND SPELL.

The second spell had not long starred when Carruthers, whose runs on the wing gained considerable ground for Marist, received a long pass' from Cashman ar.d dribbling into ■ a favourable position, eventually scored. Aroused by this reverse Y.M. attacked, but Henderson dribbled too far, and a good opportunity was lost. Marist scored their second goal through a, fine piece of work. Thomas, taking a pass from McCarthy. dribbled well down and sent on to Carruthers, where he in turn passed to McßlHgott, who kicked to Lowe on the left wings and this player dribbled between the two backs and sent in a stinging shot, which gave Thirkell no hope; Marist 2, Y.M. 0. From the kick-off Phillips and Cusack brought play into their opponents area, but Casey and Ryan relieved. On the other wing Morris and Henderson got going well until Thomas intercepted a pass and transferred to Burke, who with Lowe took play to Y.M. half, but Williamson stopped a dangerous rush. Burke aid Thomas (Marist) initiated a good rush, the shot by the former being saved by Thirkell. McElllgott appeared to score, but it was growing dark and the score was disallowed, as there was some uncertainty on the point. The remainder of the game was played iu the darkness. There was no further score, and Marist left the field victors by 2 goals to nil.

DIAMONDS t. SWIFTS. On the Kelburn Park on Saturday the two senior Association teams. Diamonds and Swifts, indulged in an evenly contested match, which resulted in a win for the former by six goals to one. Although the scoring was chiefly in Diamonds’ favour, the game 'was by no means an uninteresting one; it was one of those in which the final score does not acculrately indicate ithe relative merits of tho contesting sides. For tho winners Li vers age secured three goals. On one occasion, bolting down the field with the ball at his toe, he potted neatly between the posts. Later he stopped the ball cleverly in a nice position for a shot and -then teed it quickly past the opposing full-backs. Ahearno secured his first goal in like manner, taking a fast exchange and pushing through. His second resulted from a scramble. l3v the opening half the Swifts had several attempts at goal, and again in the closing stages of, the game. Their work in the circle was specially commendable. - - The orie scorer for the team was Heebie.

INSTITUTE r. PETONE.

Although Institute defeated Petone by 6 goals to nil the play was fairly even. It was the hardest fought-out game played by Petone this season, and had the shooting at goal been better the scores fmt up against them’would have been ess. Houston obtained both goals for Institute. JUNIOR GAMES. Thorndon met the undefeated Thistle eleven at Association Park on Saturday afternoon.
