COLLIER SMASHES DOCK

OVERWHELMING BUSH OF WATER.

As a collier was leaving the dock at Birkenhead she crashed into tho dock-gates, and the water, pouring out into tho river, overturned barges and small craft. Tho collier herself was washed into tho river on a ten-foot wave.

Rescue vessels were helpless against the torrent. Six lives were lost.
