INTERESTING CAREER
WELL-KNOWN SPORTSMAN Mr Charles Boyle, who has just taken over the New Commercial Hotel from Mrs A. R. Durrant, is a wellknown sportsman whoso horses have raced prominently on the principal courses in the Dominion. It is now a good few years since “Charlie” first took an interest- in tho “sport of kings." That was way back when AH' Spencer Gollan’s champion Moifaa was untried. Air A. Ellingham, of Hastings, then owned Aloifaa, and Charlie Boyle, an ambitious amateur, assisted in'the breaking-in process. Subsequently tile good horse referred to was acquqired by Air Gollan, who took him Home, where ho won fame for New Zealand by capturing the English Grand National Steeplechase at Aintre. Charlie then bought that “gay deceiver" Denzel, which afterwards broke its neck while competing in the Great Northern Hurdles in the inter ests of Air E. W. Alison. AVith Golden Loop he won several hurdle races, but he had an even better run when ho became associated with Air “Jack” Hennah in the ownership of Captain Jingle and Julian. The former was the beat ‘ ‘lepper" of his year, winning several events, including tho Grand National Steeplechase at Christchurch. At the beginning of last season; Pretty Bobby (ManiapOto —Lady Helen) took his eye as a jumper; and he promptly became tho owner. Pretty Bottby showed such good form, on the tracks, however, that he decided to give him a run' in such event® ■ with the result that he led the field in five races before being sold for £SOO to Mr H. Good a Taranaki sportsman. At present -Mr Boyle is without a representative, hut it will be passing strange if he does not soon join tho ranks of AVellingtton owners, -
