A STOLEN BANGLE
ACCUSED SENT TO PRISON. Jesse James Coombs, when charged before Mr W. G. Riddell, S.M., in tho Magistrate's Court yesterday with stealing a gold bangle and vgold neckchain, valued at £5,. the property of Eva May . Wilson, entered a - plea of not guilty^
Mrs Wilson said she resided at 150, Tinaiori road, and kept boarders, one of -whom was a, friend of' the defendant's and whom he visited.- The !rs in court were her property; she had miissed them early in May. Ohief-Detective Ward-said the aoI oused had sold the articles to a sec-[ond-hand dealer for the sum of 17s 6d, and had given his address as Fitzherbert street, Petone. [ | The accused said that in April last 1 he went to see a friend named Campbell, who boarded at 150, Tinakori road. Campbell _ was ill at the time and he asked witness if he had any money thait he could lend him. Witness said that he had not, and Campbell said: "Well -here is a bangle and nock' chain that belonged to my ; go and sell it for £l." Witness stated that he sold the articles for the amount stipulated, and bought ' some whisky, brandy and grapes with the proceeds. These' be gave to Campbell. Donald Campbell said he had known the accused for a number of years.. In regard to his statement about the jewellery there was, absolutely no truth in it as far as ho was concerned. Coombs did bring some . grapes to the house, and he' told him he was foolish to waste his money, as-ho understood that he had not very much. The- accused, who had been in trouble before, was convicted and sent to prison for a month.
