Yesterday a large crowd of Soccer followers made their way to Atsociation Park to witness tie representative match between a selected team from the town and. one from the country. In view of the visit of the Aucklanders, who will try conclusions with Wellington, the selectors of the Wellington Football Association -fixed this match to assist them in the selec- ] tion of the team to represent Wellington in the Brown Shield match. The teams were as follow: Town (all black). —Goal, Tarrant; backs. Bell, W. Thomas; half-backs, McArthur, McGirr, Thompson; , forwards. Smith, M. MoElligott, Cakebread, Paten, and Knowles-Smith. Country (blue and black). —Goal, Porieous; backs, J. Ferguson, Sorbie; half-backs, Bene, Batten (captain), Whitehouse; forwards, Bold. Windley, D„ Ferguson, Lewis. Hears. Country won the toss, and elected to play with the sun at . their backs. From the kick-off the town forwards made their way towards their opponents’ twenty-five, where J. Ferguson' relieved to Batten, who transferred to Bold, the latter’s shot going wide. From the kick, MoElligott sent on to Smith, on the wing, who tested Porteous, but the latter was safe. Not to be denied, the blacks came again, but Porteous saved at tho risk of a corner. From the, corner kick a melee took place in front of the goal, whore off-side play robbed tho blacks of a score. Smith, who was doing good work for the blacks on the right wing, received the hall from McElligott, and, making his way down-field, centred, but it was intercepted by 0. Ferguson, who found the line. Rene sent on to Batten, who made his way towards the blacks’ area, and transferred to D. Ferguson,- who- sent tho leather over the post. Thomas and
Bell, at full-back for the town eleven, had a difficult task in keeping their opponents out. From a pass from Knowles-Smith Baton secured the ball, and shot a fine goal, and town were leading by one goal when halftime was called. In the second half, the blues opened with a determined rush, but again the black defence was effective. Scob’.e sent on to Whitehouse, who trans- ■ ferred to Lewis, but the latter lost 5 control of the ball. McElligott, centro forward for tbo blacks, got tho ball at toe, and sept the leather be- ’ tween the posts, but again the goal was disallowed owing to off-side play. The bides retaliated, and from a ■ scramble in front of Wellington’s goal 1 Batten shot, and tho ball rolled over . tho line, making the scores: Coun- . try 1, Town 1. From this on play was fast, both sides making determined efforts to ' score, but without result. • FOURTH GRADE TRIAL, GAME. • Tho match between the Fourth A and the Fourth B resulted in the for- ' mcr ' winning by four goals to one. 1 Burke and Lambert scored for the for- .' mer, while T. Francis netted the lattor. team’s only goal.
