LABOUR AND THE JOCKEYS

TRAMWAYMEN RUN THE OARS

PER ASSOCIATION. -AUCKLAND, June 3. . The threatened strike of tramwaymen in connection with the recent dismissal of jockeys did not affect the races to-day. Tho men booked to run the race care declined to leave the barn until the management diverted a largo number of cars from other routes to those adjacent to the racecourse. After a lapso of forty minutes, the men who had determined not, to,run the specials assisted in conveying racegoers, though their cars had not the usual d. -donation signs. There was no hitch in the running of the race trains. The fact that ‘‘the jockeys are riding" had a deal to do with the breakdown of the threatened strike. Pickets were on duty trying to dissuade people from attending the raeeis, but there was no apparent diminution In the crowd bound thither.

The Wellington Drivers’ Union decided in support of tho Jockeys’ Union in its dispute with, the employers to declare the racecourse “Black." A further resolution appointed pickets, instructing them to ask members of the union and affiliated unions not to go to tho Otaki races. This was carried out, and it is said that few drivers went to the races yesterday. The Drivers’ Union, which is affiliated to tho Transport Federation, at last night’s meeting also decided not to carry any food or any other material for racing stables.
