Raphael’s pictures seem to bp peculiarly ill-fated. Only a few years ago his ‘‘La Bello Jardiniere’’ was picked up at a secondhand shop in Pans for 44 francs. His Vatican ‘‘Adam and JOve” was found —flung aside in« the corner of a picture-dealer's shop Jn the Rue St. Lazaro, by an artist #ho paid 100 francs for it, and sold it a few days later for 80,000; and for a modest 50 centimes a Parisian art-amateur purchased Raphael’s original design for his great picture, ‘‘La Disputa del Sacramento,” for which ho Ujulcl willingly have paid 20,000 times as much. ’
