YESTERDAY’S RAGING
THE OTAKI MEETING RED RIBBON WINS THE CUP. JUDGE HOISTS WRONG NUMBER TWICE. 80-PEEP SCORES AGAIN. (Sxiecial to tho “Times.’ ) The Otaki Maori Racing Club opened its .winter meeting yesterday. inere was a record crowd present, and a hue day’s sport was enjoyed. The weather was beautiful, but the track was very heavy, and slow times were recorded. There was heavy wagering throughout the day, and in most of the events good dividends were ire-turned. Tho New Plymouth gelding Depredation was backed' as a certainty in the Cup, and the little fellow ran a great second after getting all the worst of tho running. THE DIGGER WINS THE MAIDEN. The big field of nineteen contested the opening event, 'the Maiden. AcbUleon and Chant Royal were the best backed and there was money for Sir Wai. At the start Chant Royal rushed to the front, and when tho field settled down ho was four lengths clear, with I’a Kara k a and Sir Wai prominent among the others. Chant Royal led into the straight, but at the distance was tiring badly. W. Bowden, who had been well placed all along, here brought The Digger through, and got up in time to win by a neck. Sir Wai was a neck away third, and Pakaraka was fourth. ROYAL EXCHANGE SCORES EASILY. There wae another big field in the Flying Hack Handicap, sixteen facing the starter. Yankee Dan and Hoyal Exchange were in front practically all the way. At the entrance to the straight Royal Exchange assumed a decided lead, and went on to win easily by about a length. Stutter was a tarr thud, and then came MUitai-re and Princess Marion. Princess Mttrion got all the worst of the start, and did "well to finish close up. GOOD RACE FOR THE TAIHOA « STEEPLES.
Silent Dick was the best backed of the lot sent out to contest tho Taihoa Steeples, and Master Webster was well supported. • Tornea and loddy went to the front when the field was released, but Toddy ran off at the first fence. Round the back Pawerewere hit the front, and Silent Dick movdd up a Utile. Tho field fenced safely the whole of the first round, but at tho hnMle going oat of the straight Master V ©hater came down. With a mile to go. Gaokwar was with the leaders, _ but Silent Dick and Applaud were going well. Ihose three and Pawerewere were the leading division for the rest of the jouiney, and In tho end Gaekwar won comfortably by a length from Pawerewere, with Applaud third and Silent Dick fourth. CURIOUS BUNGLE IN CUP DECISION.
aJTho Raukawa Cup was a great betting race. Depredation wound up favourite after a great battle on the machine with Bonnie Heather. The favourite did not get the best of tho start, and was very unlucky all through the running. Nobleman was first out, but Rose Pink was taken to the front after tho field had gone a couple of furlongs. Red Ribbon unci Penury Rose were well placed along the back, where the favourite took advantage of an opening, and mode up some ground. Before tho turn Depredatun was close behind the leaders, and Rose Pink was done with. Rod Ribbon shot out at the distance, and was challenged by Depredation, who had got through on tho rails. In a good finish Ecu Ribbon won by a neck, with Detroit a fair third. Rose Pink fourth, and Penury Hose fifth. The judge hoisted Sea Foam's number on top, but on the crowd demonstrating ho took the numbers down. Goldfinch, on Depredation, stepped forward, saluted the judge, and up went Depredation’s number- Another demonstration followed, end in the end a correct placing was arrived at. SWEET SONG BEATS A WEAK FIELD A weak field contested tho hack mile, and the public, invested heavily on tho chances of Printemps and Utuwai. Riki swerved when the barrier was released and lost his diminutive rider. Printemrs and Utuwai led out of the straight. With a couple of furlongs covered Utuwai went to the front and there he remained till nearing the business end where Sweet Song took charge. Printemps challenged Sweet Song, but had no chance with her, and the Danube filly won nioely by two lengths. Utuwai was third, and Persian Prince, who was well up all the way. was fourth. 80-PEEP WALKS IN. Tho Taipua Handicap, the open six furlongs, was a rather simple affair for 80-Peep. At the start Trentham Rose led, followed by Gold Problem and Daytime. There was not much change in the • order till nearing -the turn, when 80-Pcop moved up to the field, and in tho run to the judge won easing up by three lengths from Matatua, with Gold Problem and Old Gold next. WILLY’S KNIGHT. AT LAST. Miss Land was the first to move from a good start, and showed tho way to Flight Commander. Admiration and Willy’s Knight to the five furlong post, where tho latter came through and led up to the dip and into the straight. Ho was challenged bv Prodigal and Admiration half-way up the straight, but had only to bo shaken up'to win by a length. Prodigal was half a length in front of Admiration, with Miss Land next.
