The Union Company advise that the departure of the Manuka from AVellington for Sydney and Melbourne has boon postponed from noon till 5 p.m. to-day. ZEALANDIC IN POET. The Shaw. The Union Company advise that tho Mapourika is to he despatched from AVellington on Monday with general cargo for Auckland. Tho vessel arrived at AVellington at 10.50 a.m. yesterday from- Whangarei via Napier, and berthed at No. 14, south, Jervois quay, where she will put out a quantity of cement. PICKED UP BY TALUNE. Nows camo by the Talune, which arrived at Auckland from the Eastern Pacific recently, of the three-masted barquentino Retriever, found, deserted and waterlogged, between Raiatca and Papeete. The vessel was en route from Puget Sound to Peru with a largo cargo of timber, and had been abandoned at sea, as her deck cargo had taken charge. The crow had taken to the boats, and mado for the Marquesas Islands, and there was .“not a living creature on board—not even a rat.” Her topsail and gallant sail had been snapped off, and were trailing, and the vessel wai badly waterlogged. ALENA FOR GREYMOUTH. The coastal steamer Manaroa. formerly a well-known .Wellington-owned vassal, has been sold by Messrs Miller Bros., of Port Chalmers, to Captain H. Johnston, of Lovuka, for the Islands copra trade. Tho Manaroa, which was built in Auckland in 1397, has a gross tonnage of 121.82. Messrs Miller Bros, acquired her to carry machinery from the North Island, and she afterwards was salvaging at the AYaikare, before being put into the coastal carrying trade. Thoroughly overhauled and repaired, she showed all-round improvement. On. her latest run from Lyttelton to Port Chalmers she developed a half-knot of extra speed, and a new propeller now being fitted is exported to produce another extra half-knot, totalling nine knots altogether. Captain Johnson will probably be leaving in about a week for Fiji with his new iUumer. CANADIAN GOVERNMENT LINE. FIFTY CARGO, CARRIERS. Canada, like her Australian sister, has a Government steamship line. The Australian company is known os the Commonwealth Lino, while that of Canada boasts tho proud title of the Canadian Government Merchant Marine. Mr Ross, Canadian Government Trade Commissioner in Australia, had something to say recently regarding the activities of this State enterprise. In liis words tile Government had embarked upon a '‘formidable shipbuilding programme." Already about 50 cargo steamers had been built or contracted for. A few days before Mr Ross left Vancouver tho Government had placed an order for three additional steamers of over 8000 tons register to be built in Vancouver yards, and further contracts by other yards wore anticipated.' One steamer carrying a. cargo of over 2,000,090 feet of B.C. Douglas fit (Oregon) would leave Vancouver for Melbourne this mon-tli, while another steamer ot over 8000 tons register would ho sailing shortly for Melbourne and Sydney with limber, paper, and general cargo. So far the Canadian Government Merchant Marino had paid handsomely. It was tile policy of the Government to endeavour to open up new trading routes rather than to compote with those already established. “Some of tho steamers under construction in Canada,’’ said Mr Ross, "have a capacity of over 10.500 tons, and others are contemplated with g, capacity of 12,500 tons. _ This lino is worked in conjunction with the Canadian National Railways, of which tho Canadian. Northcm, and Grand Trunk systems comprise tho greater mileage. The National Diailways igivo two transcontinental lines, while the well-known Canadian Pacific system makes the third transcontinental system within the Dominion/' The Minister of Marino officially slated in November last that the profits which had accrued since the construction of the Government steamers—during the period of flip war—had. paid the entire outlay on tho date of his announcement.
