YESTERDAY’S CASES. At the Magistrate’s Court yesterday .before Mr E. P/igo, S.M., Violet Watson was charged with being found drunk in Tory street on Tuesday, and breaking -her prohibition order. ■ Tho accused was fined £1 on each , charge, in default three days’ imprisonment. A first offender, 'convicted .of drunkenness, was fined os, in default 24" hours’ imprisonment. “BOUGHT FROM A STRANGER.” Michael Gray Higgins, labourer, pleaded not guilty to stealing a gold brooch, valued at 30s, the property of a person unknown. The accused pawned the brooch; and, when charged by a constable with having stolen it, said that he had bought it from a arranger, and had pawned it to got tho os to pay him with. In the wit-ness-box he stated thdt he had bought it some mouths ago in Auckland us a wedding present for a lady. Prisoner was fined £5, in default ono month’s imprisonment, previous convictions for drunkenness, etc., being on record against him. ALLEGED THEFT OF JEWELLERY. . Jesse James Cbombes was remanded till to-morrow on a charge of stealing a gold bangle and a gold neckchain, valued at .£5, the property of Eva May Wilson. A SORDID CASE. Charles Lewis pleaded not guilty to stealing sum of £4, Die property of William Ivestlo, also stealing a watch and leather chain, and 10s in money, valued in all at 18s 6d, the property of Alexander Prince. Evidence was given that the accused stole the property in question from the clothing of the two men who were employed at Levin’s store, "when he went there to sell boot laces. Ho then pleaded guilty to bothcharges and was sentenced to two month’s hard labour on each, to run concurrently.
