SIR JOHN ROBERTS

His Excellency tho Governor-Gener-al has been advised that His Majesty the King has been graciously pleased, on the occasion of His Majesty’s Birthday, to confer upon Mr John Roberts. C.M.G., of Dunedin, the Honour of Knight Bachelor, and upon Mr Thomas Noel Brodrick, 0.8. E., Under-Sec-retary, Lands -and Survey Department, Wellington, tho Honour of Companion of the Imperial Service Order,

Sir John Roberts, C.M.G., was horn at Selkirk, Scotland, on October 30th, 1846, being tho fourth son of the late George Roberts and Agnes Fowler. In 1870 ho married Louisa Jane, second daughter of Charles Henry Kettle, of Littlebourne House, Dunedin. Sir J. Roberts was educated at Cheltenham Grammar School, Edinburgh Academy and Queen Street Institution, Edinburgh, and in 1864 ho emigrated to Melbourne to stqdy station management and the wool business. He arrived in Dunedin in 1868, ■where he started the well-known business knowri as Murray, Roberts and Co. He was president of the Now Zealand and South Seas Exhibition, held in Dunedin, in 1889-90, and held the office of Mayor of that city in 1890. He was awarded the C.M.G. in 1891 in recognition of his services in connection with tho exhibition. During the years 1878-90 he was a director of the Union Steam Ship Company, and Christchurch Meat -CompanyHe also represented the Kaikoura district on tho Otago Provincial Council and was a councillor for the Deep Stream Riding on the Taieri County Council Among his recreations ; are fishing, deer-stalking and riding. Mr Thomas Noel Brodrick, 1.5.0., 0.8. E., was born in London on Do comber 25th, 1855. He was appointed assistant surveyor of South Canterbury and general Government staff, also rabbit and road surveyor, in April, 1877. In 1895 he was elected to the position of district surveyor of North Canterbury, and in July, 1906, received the appointment of land officer at Gisborne. His advancement in the public service was steady, and he was subsequently appointed to thd v position of Under-Secretary to the Lands and Survey Department, Wellington, and for his valuable services »as awarded the Order of the' British Empire.
