ELECTION FOR BALLARAT SEAT
By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright (Received June 2. 9.15 p.m.) MELBOURNE, June 2. The. Court of Disputed Election Returns,, on the appeal by Air McGrath, declared the election for thc_ Ballarat Beat at the last Federal elections void, the court stating that the evidence revealed almost incredible carelessness on the part of local officers. The case arose out of the defeat of Mr McGrath, the- retiring Labour member, by Ma-jor--Kerby- (Nationalist) by one vote.
The position at Ballarat was_ most curious. On a certain date 277 abWnfee votes were counted and when the task'wag entered upon Major Kerby (Nationalist) was 22 in the lead. Of the 277 votes there were- 7 informal, 146" for Mr McGrath (Labour) and 124 for Major Kerby. The former thus gained 22, - making the aggregate, Major Kerby 13,531, Mr D. O. , McGrath 13,531. As the result of the recount Major Kerby defeated McGrath by a single votf.
