In consequence of ill-health, the Rev. G. W. Christian, vicar of Lowef Eiccarton (Christchurch) has resigne' from the charge which he has hcl for seven years.
The Mayor of Christchurch (Dr B. T. J. Thacker, M.P.), has been elected patron of the New Zealand Rugbj League, which lias its headquarters ai Auckland. .
The Very Rev. Dean O. W. Carrington, M.A., has been again nominated as the Government’s representative on the Board of Governors of Canterbury College.
Mr Roy Braeted, national hoys' work director of the Y.M.C.A. for Australia, has been attending a- Dominion Y.M.C.A. Conference in Christchurch, and has left there for Dunedin.
The Hon. J. G.-Coates (Minister for Public Works) returns from his departmental trip to Auckland and the north to-morrow, and leaves Wellington again on Saturday for Napier, Gisborne, and district.
Sir Cecil Rodwell, Governor of Fiji, and Captain Rupert Westmacott have gone on to Mount Cook, after ■' having been the guests' of Mr and f Mrs Herbert Elworthy, Craigmore, South Canterbury.
The new Governor-General (Vis-, count Jdlicoe) has been elected patron of the New Zealand Football Association, and several references wer« made to his keen interest in the game. ‘‘l think he will make a very good ornament to our association " remarked the chairman (Mr Monckton). “He will be all right; he it.a very good sport." ,
Dr." C. J. 'Reakes (Direptor of the Agricultural Department) has been appointed first commissioner for New Zealand in reference to the administration of the phosphate supplies at Nauru Island, held jointly by the British, Australian, and New Zealand Governments. It is the intention that Dr. Reakes shall take charge of the operations for a month or two during the initial stages only, and when the work is well under way d successor, already selected by the Prime Minister,- will be appointed.
Mr R. B. Morris, the new Secretary to the Post and Telegraph Department, is to leave New Zealand by the Niagara at the end of the. present month for the purpose of attending the International Postal, Conference, ’which is to he held in Madrid shortly. It is expected that Mr Morris, who is to return via Suez, will be away for at least six months. During his absence Mr A. T. Markham (first assistant secretary) will undertake the duties pf secretary to the department. In 1014, Mr W. R. Morris, then Secretary to the Post and Telegraph Department, left New Zealand to attend the Postal Conference, which was to have been held that year at Berne, Switzerland, hut owing to the outbreak of the war, his journey was cut short just as he had reached New York.
