The London wool sales opened very weak, prices being 5 to 20 per cent, below last London sales' closing rates. Half the offerings were withdrawn. {Received June 1, 8.5 p.m.) % LONDON, May 31 Following on the recent declines in prices at tho London provincial and Antwerp wool sales, the trade generally expected that the London auctions opening to-day would produce lower rates, but the extent of the decline (five to twenty per cent, below last London sales' closing rates) exceeded all anticipations. U,<i& bales wero offered, of which 2707 were New, Zealand, and the selection was fairly representative. There was a large attendance, but the bidding was, very slack. Yorkshiremen wwtud not j buy merinos, and Continental buyers operated sparingly in them at <m allround decline of from 15 to 20 per cent. Pine crexssbreds met slow bidding at 10 to 15 per cent, decline. Medium and lower grades found better support at about a 5 per cent, 'decline. New Zealand wool from the "Struan" clip made «d. Foreign rates on the London Exchange are as follow :—Paris, 50.05 francs to JEI: Stockholm, 18.03 Kroner; Christiania, 21.63 kroner; Calcutta, 25}d to the rupee; Montreal, 4.25 dollars; New York, 3.8&i dollars. Wheat trade is slightly brisker, and a fair volume of business has been done in oats during the past few days, but there is no change to record in prices. CloTer 6eeds are being purchased by merchants at slightly advanced prices, and this market ,is more animated now. The ruling rate for potatoes is £1 per ton. . There, is no change to (report in the chaff market. HIDE SALE IN CHRISTCHtRCH. TEE PRESB ASSOCIATION. CHRJSTCHDRCH, June 1. A sale of hides this afternoon attracted a fair attendance, but the proceedings were lifeless and prices fell considerably. Ox hides bringing about 4d per lb, «cow hidee 6d, yearlings 7d to ad. and calfskins l2d to 14d lebs. There were many passings. » ' WOOL SALES. Dalgety and Co., Ltd., report having received the following camei-'ram from tueir London office, under date of 29th instant: —"Sheepskins—11,500 bales were oftored and 6000 sold. There was a fair demand. Prices have declined from 20 to por cent, as compared with last sheepskin sales' closing rates." DAIRY SALES. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, report:— During the past week wo have held dairy sales on account of Mr H. G. Hammond, Oroua Downs, and Mr Herbert Gawler, Bunnythorpe. At Mr Hammond's sa,!e the attendance was fair and prices were satisfactory :—Best cows made from X"2l to .£23, fair cows .£l6 10s to .£2O, aged (three-quarter and empty cows) XI to £l4 10b At Mr <Jawler's sale the weather was very bad, thoattendance poor, and price* were not up to expectations':—Best cows made .£ls to .£2l 10s, fair cows -£8 to jEI-1, empty cows £&. PEDIGJIEB .JERSEY SALE. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Go., Ltd., Wellington, report that, in cinjunction with Messrs Abraham and Williams, Ltd., they held a disposal sale at Te Horo on behalf of the estate of the. late It.-D. Harknees. This sale created a considerable amount of interest, and was attended by buyers from all part* of the North Island, and proved .to'be the most successful sale yet held in the Dominion for pedigree Jersey cattle. The Jate Mr Harkness was a keen lovor of tho Jersey and spared no time-or expense in building up the herd, which contained the very best strains. His excellent judgment was clearly demonstrated on Thursday last. The bidding was keen and prices realised constituted a record. The highest-priced cow, Cuba Gipsy, was knocked -down at £OO guineas. The averages are as follow:—Cow 115 guineas, yearling heifers "3 guineas, heifer calves 63 guineas, 2vear bulls 49 guineas, bull calves 4C guineas. Of the later tho calf Waimana Genoral realised 161 guineas. Some ol tho prices realised are as follow:
