PETONE BOROUGH
MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. A meeting of the Petoue Borough Council was held last evening. .There woro present:—The Mayor (Mr J. WMcKwan),. and Councillors C. V. Brocklebank, W. Cos, J. Church o use, J. Kyle, W. Hoy, A. Anderson, D. Bedir.'gheld, nnd Q. Cook. An application by W. H. Lonir tor permission to subdivido portion of his property at Koro Koro was referred to tho -borough engineer for his report. Tt was decided to support tho Stratford Borough Council in its resolution to ask the Government to tako steps to make Saturday afternoon a universal half-holiday throughout the Dominion. The Palmerslon North Borough Council asked for support in its endeavour to provail upon the Government to at once make an effort to obtain adequate supplies of cement in order that local bodies may carry out important work*. The support asked for was granted. CHILDREN'S FOOTWEAR, A resolution i "That, with a view to affording some measure of relief to the parents of families during the prcsont abnormal times, and taking into consideration the fact that the New Zealand manufacturers are unable to cope with tho demand for .adult footwear, t.ue Government be requested to immediately 1 take the necessary steps for the removal of the duty on children's footwear," was forwarded 'by the Hawera Borough Coun Councillor Bedingfield said that the resolution was one that should recurve the hearty support of the council. New Zealand manufacturers who in tho Past had to contend against low wages nnd cheap freights that obtained in other countries were now sufficiently protected, and were, not afraid of being under sold. It was resolved to support the resolution
