HELP THE ORPHANS
AN APPEAL FOR ASSISTANCE.
Tho financial strain consequent to the upkeep and maintenance of 30U orphans housed in St. Joseph's Orphanage, Upper Hutt, and managed by the bisters of Mercy, has necessitated . an appeal being made to the Public for assistance Jus Worship the Mayor has generously given tho Sisters permission to have a street collection on Friday next for this purpose, and a number of ladies have volunteered to cariv out this work. Tho cost of living, both in food and clothing, is keenly felt at tho orphanage, which has thrown open its doors to tho children of soldiers killed or maimed In tne Great War, and ulso to the children of tho influenza victims. Little or uuthing is contributed for tho support of these children, the Sisters haying to rely on tho generosity of the public toaid them in their self-sacrificing work. 'l'hc children are well cared for, and a more happy or contented- lot would be hard to find. They have a fine clean home, and spacious grounds at tho Upper Butt, where they receive every nttontion from devoted lttdion, win? have sacrificed their livos for tho little orphans, fo whom they aro deeply attached. It 13 hoped, theretore, that tho appeal on Friday next will.not fall on deaf oars, and that a sum sufficient to tido Over tho present difficulties will bo tlio result.
