SELWYN V. 'VARSITY
FORMER WIN STRENUOUS GAME. At Kelburn Park the high wind blowing at an agio across the field dnterferred considerably with what would otherwise have boon a very good senior gam® between Selwyn and 'Varsity. The teams seemed to be fairly equally matched, but Selwyn having somewhat the advantage of the wind at tho start got away first after some minutes of open play, and only a good mark prevented them scoring. Shortly afterwards, however, Jack Shearer got over the line, but Syd- Shearer, who took the kick, failed to convert— Selwyn 3, 'Varsity nil. 'Varsity then, with some good forward play, took the ball into Sehvyu’s twentyfive. but, through not passing out, a good opportunity was missed. Shortly afterwards there was a splendid save by
Murphy, Selwyn’s full-back, whose excellent marking; and sure kicking were notable features of the game. Selwyn then took the ball down the field and H, Xjindley with a fine drop kick scored a goal—Selwyn 7: ’Varsity nil. Good play by ’Varsity followed, from which Day obtained a try, but Scott, taking the kick, mu not succeeded in increasing the score—Solwyn 7; ’VarsietyS. After some up and down play in which neither side had the advantage, after a dashing piece of forward play Earl scored' a try for Selwyn ana Syd. Shearer converted. At half-time the, state or the game was; Selwyn 12, ’Varsity 3. ’VASITY FAIL TO EVEN.
After play was resumed "Varsity, with the wind in their favour, played up to more purpose. H. LindW secured a good mark about 'Varsity's twenty-dye. but Murphy, who took the. kick, taped to score. Ijater, from a series of scrums near the ’Varsity goal line, 15- Clifton scored a try, which, however, Syd. Shearer was unable to convert. Vigorous play, mostly in ’Varsity’s territory, followed, but a fine break-away .by Norman Niccol, combined with quick passing, resulted in a fine try by . Curne for 'Varsity, from which Soott kicked a goal. This closed thb scoring, and when the boll rang the position of (be play was:— i Selwyn 15 - 'Varsity 8 Captain T. H. Jones acted as referee.
