HEATING IN WELLINGTON

SOME CONSOLATION "IT MAY BE BAD, BUT IT’S BETTER THAN AUCKLAND." While "Wellington residents are complaining of the restrictions on the use of radiators, there may bo consolation to them in the knowledge that the people are faring much -worse in Auckland. There, apparently, the use of radiators has been completely prohibited. Considerable hardship, has, it is said, been caused by this embargo. Recently the, trust manager of the New Zealand Insurance Company wrote to the council on behalf of the tenants of the company, complaining of the acute discomfort caused to them and their staffs, numbering 300 people, by tho lack of heat, which was said to be an actual menace to health. It was submitted that the counsil, hairing induced the company to instal electric heating only when the building was erected, was under an obligation to maintain the supply of current for radiators. On the ground principally that no "concession" could _be granted to large consumers while the small peopWwere deprived of heating, the council threw out the application with considerable vigour. . . Apparently State and municipal management are being subjected to a good deal of adverse criticism at P l "' sent. In this connection one wellknown Wellington resident, while discussing the subject with a ‘ 'Now Zealand Times” reporter, said. “I Know the position generally is most unsatisfactory, hut the council can’t do_ impossibilities, and it would .bo suicidal to attempt them. The embargo placed on heating in "Wellington is bad enough, in all conscience, and has canned, and will continue to cause, much inconvenience and some hardship. But there is one consolation—it is a good deal better than Auckland and other centres."
