MERCHANT SERVICE
A STRIKE THREATENED OBJECTION TO A COASTAL STEAMER'S CAPTAIN. For some time past there has been trouble between the Merchant Service Guild in Auckland and the owners of one of the coastal steamers running out of that port concerning the employment on that vessel of a., master who, according to the guild,' is not- loyal. The mattpr was brought, in the' first instance/ uuder the notice of the Government, and there has been continued correspondence with Sir James Allen, but, so far, no settlement has been arrived at. We understand tliat the guild, wliich comprises the officers of the steamers, trading to and from Auckland, have- resolved that if the man is not immediately removed, they will come olf the vessels until t-he question at issue- ds settled: The principal grievances against the man are those of nationality and an alleged too free expression of opinion concerning the qualities of Germans as"., opposed to Britons. Surprise is. expressed by 'seafaring men at the apparent reluctance of the Government to_ move in this matter, and more especially so in view of the readiness- of the authorities to institute proceedings in other directions. The trouble has now reached an acute stage, and it is said that unless action is immediately taken in the direction indicated bv the guild, there -will be an immediate 'strike of steamship officers ill Auckland.
