The mother of a child who had been absent from 6chool on 47 occasions durinp tho past quarter informed Mr W. Gf". Riddell, S.M., at the JLower Hutt Court yesterday that her husband was away on a hospital ship. She added that she had eight children, and had a market gardon • to attend to. Her child was kept away irom school in order that she might asßist in working the holding. The magistrate said that the girl, who was nearly fourteen years of age and had only passed the third standard, was not boing given a chance. .Bykeoping her from gaining an education she would be handicapped later in life.
