The council, of the. New Zealand Society of Accountants has unanimously appointed Major Donald Gordon John, r.tcn to the position of secretary of tho society, rendered vacant by the resignation of Air Krnest W. Hunt, Major Johnston, who is an Associate of both the New Zealand Society of Accountants and the ■ Incorporated Institute of Accountants of New Zealand, li ft New Zealand in 1915 with a commission as lieutenant in the New Zealand Field Artillery, and has been continuously on active service with the New Zea. land Division since that date. Amongst the passengers from Vancouver oy. the R.M.S. -Niagara, which arrived at Auckland on Friday, was tho Hon. Sir Timoiny Coghlan, formerly Agent-General in 'London for the State of New South Wales, and now Commonwealth representative on the Pacific Cable Board. Sir Timothy, who ha« been almost 'continuously absent from Australia since 1905, when he was appointed Agent-General, relinquishing tho latter appoint meat in. 1017, but remained in Kngland for the purpose ol seeing through the Press his monumental work, ‘‘Hahour anti Jhdustiv in Australia, •’ which was published in Feb. rnary last in four volumes. This work, u hich represented the labour of about nine years, is.practically a history of Australia from the early years of lasi century to the foundation of +he tvimmon wealth It deals exhaustively with methods of colonisation, lard settlement; public, works.
