DELAYS OF CABLES
PROTEST FROM CHAMBER OF OU ALAI iUfcOvJ Et .
A communication lias been forwarded to the Postmaster-General from the Vv citing um Cuamber ol Commerce regarding the delay which occurs in the transmission of cables. It is pointed out; “in April last, representations were made to the Secretary oi the Post and Xolegraph Department regarding the serious delay which had been experienced tor months past in the transmission of commercial cables, and Mr Morris very kindly gave all the information at his disposal regarding the matter, and reported later the position regarding beta the Eastern rixtonsion and the Pacific lines. The fact, however, is that the delay in the transmission of cables is a most serious matter to the commercial community. Whatever may be the delay in the transmission of outward cables, the delay in the receipt of inward cables is, of course, what is most apparent. Every day mercantile houses are complaining that they are losing business owing to the fact that cabled olfers and acceptances cannot he dealt with thiough the overseas telegraphic serv.co within a reasonable time. I need hardly stress that nowadays practically, all our export 'business, and a great deal of our import business, is elfected through the cable service, and, at this period particularly, when market prices are uncertain and subject to early fluctuation, it is imperative that nothing should bo left undone which can assist in remedying the present unfortunate state of aiiairs. ■ Rightly or wrongly, the commercial community feels that Press, and pussi-hy, wltar may not always bo important, Governmout messages, are be.ug given preference to commercial oaolos. My chamber feels that the delay in tho transmission of cables is the most serious question which is adversely affecting tho commercial community at the present time, and they respectfully seek your assistance to remedy the present state of affairs. Commercial houses in Wellington would have liked to have formed a deputation to you to strengthen their representations on this matter, but I understand you will not be in Wellington during the coming week."
