The Wairarapa Rugby ; Union's cham.pionship fixtures were continued this afternoon in fine .weather.; i-J. , , In the senior championship match at Carterton between Daletield and Carterton, a fairly interesting game was won by Carterton by 17 points to 6. ■ln the junior championship, Dalofield boat Red Star by 17 points to 6j' Carterton beat Gladstone by 9 points to 3. In the third class championship Red Star defeated Groytown by 14 to 6. CANTERBURY V. MAORIS FORMER WINS AFTER EXCITING ' GAME. Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, May 31. A Rugby football match here to-day between the Maori Pioneer Battalion's team and Canterbury was very fast-and most exciting. Although Canterbury, won by 16 lioints to C, play surged continually up and down the ground, and there : was a wealth of kaleidoscopic variety which, kept thd excitement of a very large crowd of spectators up to lever point. Canterbury wore rathef lucky to win; certainly there was not a ten-points margin 6f superiority, Canterbury, however, made better use of their opportunities than, tho visitors. In the first spell: a strong dribbling rush to the Maori line ended in Thompson scoring a try, which was not converted. Later on, Barclay punted high, and tho hall was badly missed by a Canterbury back, so Barclay, following up fast scored for the Maoris near the posts. Jacobs missed the .goal. Tho first spell ended with the scores even. . At the opening of, the second hsJf the pace was a cracker, > tho ball travelling up and down the field. From a centre kick by Mullins, Fitzgerald followed up and scored near the -touch-line. The attempt at goal failed. After a considerable period of exciting play—each side being in danger in , turn—Thompson scored for Canterbury, and; McLeod converted. Canterbury 11, Maoris 3. Shortly afterward a strong passing rush on the part of Canterbury- ended in McLeod scoring at the posts, and ho converted. This was followed by Hall scoring for the Maoris, but Jacobs missed an easy kick. The game ended shortly afterwards in neutral territory; with the scores: Canterbury 16 ( -Maoris 6.
