EMPIRE DAY

FUHOTSOM IN LONDON

MEMORIAL SERVICES FOR DOMINION'S DEAD.

Qfid N»Z« O&blo Association. (Keceivtd Juno 1, 11.5 p.m.) LONDON, May 30.

The outstanding Australian-New Zealand function in London on Empire Day was the memorial service for the Dominions’ dead in Westminster Abbey at noon ou Saturday. A thousand Dominion troops, of whom 350 wore Australians and 100 .New Zealanders, were present. The rest of . the Abbey was reserved for relatives, of, whom 500 were Australians and 250 Now Zealanders.

When the King and Queen had taken their seats the service commenced with the hymn “Through all the Changing Scenes.” The lesson was from Isaiah, chap. 61," arid was’ followed by Parry’s “I Was Glad.”

The Archbishop of Canterbury in his address said: For the first time in its history the whole Empire was athrob with one eager, prayerful purpose, one unshakable resolve —to prevent, a. great wrong.- Already the Dominions have had their share in their glorious history embodied in the stones of the Abbey, but now they have made their own history. For centuries to come men will tell of the indomitable prowess and selfless devotion of the Australians, New Zealanders and other Dominion soldiers on Gallipoli, on Vimy Ridge, and at Fillers liretonneux.

The service closed with Kipling’s “Recessional,” “Last Pest” and the “Reveille.”
