FRUIT AND PRODUCE

WELLINGTON MARKETS

Tlie few varieties of New' Zealand fruits which are now in evidence have been added to lately by the arrival of a. small ..shipment of Mow South Wales citrous fruits, and towards the close of last week by, a fairly large quantity of Co6k Island oranges and bananas.' A good inquiry is existing all round, but so far all the Island fruits have not been placed under the hammer, a good proportion of the shipment going - into store to-day. Dessert pears of' favourite varieties have ■ been ‘keenly eought after and prices have advanced to a considerable extent. POTATOES AND ONIONS. Values ror potatoes fn the South Island have been fairly steady just recently. Owing, however, to a big quantity having to be shipped straight away, supplies offering have been somewhat heavy. Some advices from Australia point to the fact that shipments in that direction, can only be made at values much lower than was anticipated bj' 'merchants some time ago. Consequently, now that the embargo has been "tentatively lifted, the position is tather an anomalous one. as to bring about export much lower values will fl have to rule to induce merchants in Australia to operate. Last week an advance in values was reported from the south; consequent on the exportation restriction being lifted. A good demand is resulting for onions, supplies of which are not offering freely, and the market is firm. Pickling onions are in good demand.
