THE TERRACE PRISON
PROJECTED REMOVAL.
In this week’s “Gazette” it is notified that the Governor-General, in pur suance of powers conferred by section (i ot the Public Reserves and Domains Act, 1908, declares the purpose of a certain reserve changed from a rifle range to a site for a prison. The land reierred to is an area of 362 acres L rood '27 perches, parts of sections 96, 100, 104, 108, 105, 106, and 206, Hurt itegistration District, block 1, Runucaka Survey District. The land is on the camp side of the railway, and ironts the railway line for about 24 chains, commencing from the corner ol the school site almost opposite Heretaunga railway station. This no-ice, it is presumed, points to the reservation oi the site for a prison to take -the place, of Wellington Terrace Gaol, the removal of which has been long projected, but delayed because of the difficulty of finding a suitable alternative site. The notice is issued subject to the provisions of section 7 of the. Act. According to this section, before , the change of purpose becomes effective the notice must he gazetted during four consecutive weeks, and be laid before Parliament within ten days of the commencement of the session. It either House of Parliament during the session declares' by resolution that it does not assent to the change, then no further action shall be taken in the matter. If no such resolution is pass ed, then from the end of the session the notice; shall be effectual.
