The movement in favour of the republic is supported by commercial ami linancial circles in tho Rhine Province in tho hope that they may thus escape the financial ruin which is threatening the rest of Germany. If 1* ranee is willing, they would include the Rhenish Republic within the French Customs Union. If France is unwilling to cm this, the Rhinelanders would prefei to become French altogether. BRITISH WARSHIPS OFF mbmel. STETTIN IN STATE OF SIEGE. LONDON, May 17 (delayed). \ Berlin telegram via Copenhagen states that a British fleet is anchored off Memel. It is expected that the British will shortly occupy tho city. There has been further strccu-iight-ing at Stettin. The crowd stormed tho prisons and released the prisoners, and plundered the shops. The town has been declared in a state of siege.
