REPORTS OF COMMITTEES,
The regular meeting of the City Council was held last night, and was attended by the Mayor (Mr J. P. Luke, C.M.G., M.P.), Councillors G. Frost, O. B. Norwood, J'. Hutchison, W. H. Bennett, A. R. Atkinson, T. Forsyth, J. O. Shorland,' L. MoKenzie, R. A. Wright, M.P., P- Fraser, M.l\, C. H. Chapman, J. Glover, J. M. Dale, and M. F. Luckie.
Reports of committees were adopted as follow:
The Tramways Committee reported that the following communication had been received from the Ijnder-Seoretary of the Public Works Department regarding tramway regulations:—'' With further reference to your letter of the 24ih ultimo, I am directed by the Minister for Public Works to 'state that under the circumstuncus mentioned by you, and as a result of the department's own experience of the diiheuities now obtaining relating to the importation of machinery and the execution of work in the Dominion, it has been decided to review the whole position during September next, when the Minis-er will be in a better position to decide whether or not it is reasonably possible to enforce the regulations at the end of the current year." The J)'ire Committee recom mended:—"ThaD authority be granted for the purchase of a motor-cycle for the fire brigade department, as recommended by the superintendent. That an allowance of £o per anum be granted to fire brigade firemen in the outlying districts towards tho upkeep ol telephones as recommended by the fire brigade superintendent. That permih sion to use a 'Denby' fire-proof spool bd granted to an applicant in connection with cinema entertainments, subject to the conditions laid down by the superintendent of fire, brigade." . . The Milk Committee recommended:— "That the various local bodies concern ed be asked to confer with the object of formulating a conference to be held in Wellington to consider the improvement of the arterial roads of the Manawatu and Wairarapa districts." Tho committee reported that it had received a letter from the Minister for Internal Affairs with reference to the council's weighing machine at the municipal milk station. The committee pointed out that the basis on which the milk is sold to the vendors is measure, and not tveight. The Outlying Districts Committee recommended: —."That the Hataitai Bowling Club be informed, in reply to their, request for an extension of time within which to remove the iron fence at their ground, that immediate. stepa must be taken by them for the planting of a shelter so that the original arrangements of an open fence can bo brought into effect, and that unless such steps are immediately taken, instructions will be given to have the iron fence removed." The health committee recommended that the work of repairing and painting the louvres at the municipal abattoir be put in hand, as recommended by the city engineer. The estimated cost of the work is £7O. That, in future, all question* relating to the control of dairies, and all matters relating to inspection of milk, etc., hitherto dealt with by the public health committee, be transferred to the milk committee. That it be a .commendation to the reserves committee that it- shall immediately consider tho question of the erection ol houses for caretakers of such of the city reserves as do not at present provide such accommodation. The reserves committee recommend ed ; "That letters of thanks be forwarded to the donors of tho following gifts to the Wellington Zoo: Gold fish, Mrs Atkins, Mariri crescent, Kelburn; two blue penguins, Day's Bay. That the application of the Wellington Scout Masters' Association, for the use of Newtown Park, on June 3rd, for competitions and display, be granted, sub
ject to the matter not interfering with the Peace 'Day celebrations. No charge is to be made for the use of the ground. That a recommendation of the Director of Parks and Reserves, with regard to the planting of tho lower banks at Anderson Park, bo approved. That electric light be installed in the present rooms at Newtown and Kelburn Parks, as recom- . mended by the Director of Parks and Reserves. That a shelter shed, after the nature of the open sheds erected at Newtown Park, be erected on the Lyall Bay reserve, in accordance with a recommendation" of the Director ol Parks and Reserves. That it has approved the general scheme of establishing children's playgrounds in various parts of the city, and has instructed the Director of Parks and Reserves to bring down a detailed report, with recommendations and estimate ol tho probaible cost of the same. That the Director of Parks and Reserves has reported that, owing to the requirements of the council, it will not now bo possible to supply tho public with trees and shrubs. That it has received an application from the Wellington Rugby Football League for the use of a city ground during the present season. The league is being informed that its' application web received after tho allocation of the reserves, and that the committee regrets that its request cannot be acceded to, as all tho grounds have been allotted."
