The W ootton, at present jn Ly ttelton, is due from that port on Sunday, and on taking in cargo will sail for Lytteltoi on Monday. The Mana wall sail for Pictoa and Wanganui at noon to-day, afterwards returning to W ellington. ... The. Australian steamer Timaru has ! been sold on behalf of Mr A. King to Lieutenant-Commander Patrick. 'Che steamer will be employed in tlio interState trade. • The American five-masted schooner W. H. Marston, from Portland, Orogon, with 1,250,000 ft of lumber, arrived at Sydney on May Bth. The voyage occupied 63 days, and was marked by lino weather generally. With a cargo of 577,000 ft of redwood from Eureka, the four-masted schooner John A. Campbell, owned by Burns, Philp and Co., arrived at Sydney on May 6th. The voyage occupied 08 days, and was marked by moderate weather. The transport Shropshire arrived at Melbourne oil May. 16th from the United Kingdom via Adelaide.. She left the United Kingdom on April 2nd. After discharge in Australia the Shropshire will come to New Zealand to load for the United Kingdom. Completing her maiden voyage from Great Britain, the new Commonwealth and Dominion liner Port Denison, which was buit towards .the end of last year, arrived i nPort PhiiP Bav on the mornin<- of Mav 10th. She left London on March 25th. and steamed out via the Can? routo in br>llast trim. PAKEHA DUE THIS AFTERNOON. According to advice received at midnight the Pakeha will not arrive in the .stream until 2 o'clock to-day. MAORI DELATED. I The ferry steamer Maori sailed for j Wellington at 10.30 last night, and is expected here about 10 o'clock this morni ing. It is understood that her depari ture was delayed, so that the returning isoldirs ex the Tofua. which has arrivi ed at Dunedin, could come up a day earI Her. PAPAROA FOR AUCKLAND. The New Zealand Shipping Company's liner Paparoa will sail this morning at 8 o'clock for Auckland, where, she is to discharge cargo. On the completion of her discharge the vessel will loud cargo and sail for London. PATEENA FOR SOLDIERS. The Pateena will leave tor Picton and •Nelson to-dav at 2.30 p.m. instead of 1.30 us previously .announced. The alteration has been made to suit the convenience of troops arriving by the Paheka this morning. *> THE BARWON. Lloyds' agents at Wellington (Dalgety and Co.) have received a te.ejjram troni the principal keeper, Stephen Island, stating that the Barwon with coal passed Stephen Island at 9.45 a.m. on Wednesday on her wav to Dunedin. NEW LINERS. Great changes are taking place in transatlantic travel.' New construction to replace the liners sunk by the Üboats is taking the form of a standard vessel of about 20.000 tons, with a combination of passenger and cargo-carrying capacity. No new leviathans of the type of the torpedoed White Star liner Britannic, of 45.U00 tons gross register, and j the Cunard liner Lusitania. 32,000 tons, class are being.'built to replace the lost tonnage. The ' White Star had under construction' the Homeric. 30,000 tons, when war broke out, but apart from this single exception the building of "great liners is not intended. MUST BE, BRITISH-BORN. Th& "London Gazette," published on Friday. March 24th. contains an Order-in-Council providing for the insertion in the Defence of the. THE HOSPITAL SHIP MAHBNO. It was freely stated on the Port Chalmers waterfront on Monday morning that the Imperial Government had terminated their charter of the hospital tihip Maheno, which is at present lying at Port Chalmers. . It is understood ■ that ' she will! be reconditioned for' ordinary passage service. OVERDUE SCHOONER. No news had been received in Melbourne up to May 12th regarding the progress or whereabouts of the schooner Speedway, which was making an exceptionally prolonged voyage from Boston to Melbourne with assorted freight. The Speedway passed , through the Panama Canal on January 30th, and was 135 days out. on. May 12th. A NEW PORT CURTIS. The Wellington office of the Commonwealth and Dominion Lino has received advice from London stating that the Cunard Line has purchased a new steamer from the British Admiralty, for delivery in three months. The new steamer is a fine vessel of about 7000 tons gross, and somewhat similar to the Port Chalmers. She is to be placed in the Australian service, and will be named Port Curtis. A Press Association message from Sydney states that the scow Zingara, which eft Newcastle for Gisborne on May 15th, put into Sydney. The reason is not stated. THE WESTMORELAND'S MISHAP. In reporting the unfortunate accident which occurred to the liner Westmoreland when leaving Bluff for Wellington, the Bluff "Press" states that the night was dirty and squally, and shortly alter leaving the wharf a thick drizzle obscured some of the lights necessary for pilotage. Captain Harboard (second pilot) was in charge as pilot owing to the indisposition of Captain Lindsay, harbourmaster. All. went well whilst turning at the whurf. and the vessel proceeded safely past the lightship. Shortly afterwards the green and white leading lights i were obscured by rain, and just prior to the vessel grounding in the vioinity of the Channel Rock she took a shear towards the south shore, and shortly afterwards the fore part of the vessel took the ground. Almost immediately afterwards she came clear and proceeded to sea. BHAMO SAILS THIS MORNINO. At the monthly meeting of the Hohart Chamber of Commerce recently a letter was received from Messrs W. Crosby and Co. encosing copy, of letter, from Messrs F. Green'and Co.. London, who, with Messrs Staley. Radford and Co., have acted as loadine-' brokers for the Shaw. Savill anJ Albion Co/i and th» Nrn Zealand Shipping Co.'i itoamers, which have in the past maintained the direct service between London and Hobnrt. Messrs Green and Co. stated that thsy apprehended that wh«m normal iondltions wera restored, the nth-notions of the Panama Canal route would influence tho Shaw. Savill Co. towards voyages westward to New Zealand, thereby terminating tbo eorvic* that had been manitained for so many years via Hobart. It was resolved that, in view of tho
creat loss that would ensue to Tasmania, not onlv from, an importer's point of view, but also to shippers of apples to South America, who would no longer have the opportunity of reaching that market, the shipping committee of the chamber wait upon tho Prenv.er, and ask him to cable the Agent-General in London, with a view to having the service restored, and if this is not successful to ask that the claims ot Tasmania be laid before tho Federal Government with a view to arranging for thb Commuiiwcaltti Line of steamers making a fortnightly call at Hobart to replace tho service formerly maintained bv the Shaw, SaviU and Albion and New Zealand Shipping companies. j OVERSEAS VESSELS. !
