WHAT IS WRONG WITH LABOUR?
(To the Editor "N.Z. Times.")
Sir.—Mr O'Brien treats as a "serious accusation" the difference between J. and James, and responds with the counter-ac-cusation that X am "president of the Milk Vendors' Association," which the council found it necessary to pass, legislation to deal with. As J, was replying to a double-banker it may 'be excusable if the two sot mixed. Air O'Brien can, however, find no reasonable excuse to justify "' his gratuitous, irrelevant and erratic referqnces •to a position I never occupied and an association I never was a member of, have been always and invariably hostile to. As to the "cheerful insolence" reasonable labour has to be shown the road unreasonable waterside labour is misleading it about. If this can be done in a cheerful spirit, so much the better, in view of the black cloud threatening. "The roie of the great tribune." to Mr Of'Brien's mind, evidently, is something in the nature of a pedestal at the foot of the wharf, as dominating as. the statue of Liberty at Manhattan, onlv not half as nice, surmounted with uneducated, but blatant leaders, sceptred and crowned in rape of constitutional covernment and robbery of individual rights. I hardly think Mr O'Brien's ideas of advocacy will help his cause. The contest is one of egoism versus altruism, and while the former occasionally makes a point, the latter always wins in the end. HENRY BODLEY. May 28th. 1919.
