' ' ; - It was explained by the spokesmen that under the present system travellers by the trams have frequently to pay the fare for two sections and have not actually ridden the distance, of one section. A system for the overlapping of section* was suggested.' It was also urged by the union representatives that the tramway line bo extended to the Pipitea wharf from, Waterloo quay. ’The, want of. addition, al waiting sheds at/the fish .market* Jervois quay, and-near the Harbour Boar-i X store, next to .the Oustombousq, was stressed. A claim was put forward for 'tie granting of concession tickets to afford the watersiders: an (opportunity of going home for their meals. lb* deputation’ contended that the_ reason; the men preferred .to go to their homes for their meals was tho poor quality of the-catering at many of the city' restaurants; The - disadvantages- of the , present arrangement by Which_ concession tickets are not available in, the morning after 7.30 n.m. were pointed out. Under the, existing conditions, the watersiders' had to be waiting for wbrk far too early, whereas if the concession system was extended till S n.m. ; the men would be able to avail’themselves of the system and reach the waterfront ini ’ample time. The Mayor said he would give- the men an opportunity later of, placing their,claims before the tramways board) when the matter would be thoroughly gone into. - -
